What is Burlesque and what did they wear

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In recent years the 20th century form of entertainment known as Burlesque has become popular again. It traditionally consisted of humor, performance art and adult entertainment often performed by ladies. The female performers would wear lavish clothing made up of corsets, stockings and nipple tassels and acts would consist of strip teases, stand up comedy and more extreme acts such as fire breathing.

The meaning behind burlesque is an interesting one because it means in an upside down style. The performances were specifically meant to push social boundaries of the norm and allow artists the freedom and flexibility to create new styles.

Burlesque came from nineteenth century music hall entertainment. It came about as a form of working class comedy and entertainment that would poke fun and provide social commentary against the upper classes. Because of this much of the comedy was considered low brow and vulgar which led to more extreme and risqu? acts being included.

Many famous comedians and actors were inspired or planted their roots in the genre. Stars from Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope and Abbot and Costello have their roots in burlesque and even Charlie Chaplin was a fan.

Fast forward to the 90?s and burlesque and burlesque clothing like corsets, hosiery and stockings and suspenders had become popular once more. Neo burlesque performances began emerging on the east and west coasts of the USA with acts like Dita Von Teese gaining notoriety for their take on their genre. Many of these performers carried on the tradition of the scene by wearing hosiery like stockings and corsets and performing strip teases. Recently performers like the Pussy Cat Dolls wore similar clothing and performed music in a provocative manner but didn?t have the same sort of attitude of the genre.
